You already train. Good.
That puts you ahead of most people who reach this page, and it means the work skips the part where a base gets built. Nothing here asks you to stop what you are doing, start over, or accept that the years you have already put in were the wrong years.
What follows is the honest account of what that training covers, and the three things it was never built to cover.
Already know? Book the call →Two of five, and they are the two that take longest.
The system has five dimensions. A serious grappling or striking practice delivers two of them properly, which is more than most people arrive with. It leaves three untouched, not through any failure of the art, but because no gym was ever built to teach them.
Awareness
Not in the gymWhat your training gives you. Nothing. Gyms do not teach environmental reading.
What is still missing. Reading a room, a city block, or a person before any contact occurs.
Avoidance
Not in the gymWhat your training gives you. Nothing. No grappling curriculum teaches exits or pre-contact decisions.
What is still missing. Practiced routes out, and the decision to leave before capability is needed.
Physical Readiness
You have thisWhat your training gives you. Strong. You train, and it shows.
What is still missing. Conditioning that integrates with what you already do rather than competing with it.
Capability
You have thisWhat your training gives you. Strong. Real technique, tested under real pressure.
What is still missing. The same principles outside the gym: street clothes, no gi, no referee, no familiar partner.
Context
Not in the gymWhat your training gives you. Nothing. Your gym knows nothing about your life.
What is still missing. Travel patterns, public visibility, family exposure, whether you carry.
The two you hold are genuine and they are not re-taught. The work starts where your training stops.
The questions that actually come up.
Will this interfere with my training?
This is the most common question from people who already train, and it deserves programming detail rather than reassurance. Grappling is the cardio on rolling days. Lift on non-rolling days, or before. Two days a week is enough to progress.
Expect four to six weeks of feeling gassed while you adapt. In the first month the limiter is technique, not conditioning, which surprises people who arrive fit.
The interference nobody warns you about: gripping instead of relaxing taxes your grip and forearms, so pulling may feel slightly weaker for a few weeks. It passes as your grip economy improves.
I lift. I am in good shape.
Lifting builds the platform, and the platform matters. What it does not build is what happens when the other person is not cooperating and your heart rate is at 170. Those are different systems.
The only thing that develops the second one is a resisting human being. You already know this from your own training: nothing has ever made you better at a lift except the lift.
I am fifty-two. Is it too late?
The people who do best at this are not the youngest. They are the ones who stop trying to win. Most of what decides an outcome was never physical, and the physical part gets calibrated to what you can actually sustain, because a program that wrecks you is a program you quit.
I tried a gym and it was not for me.
The shape of it is usually the same. The class assumed you had no other obligations. You were the oldest person in the room. Nobody explained why any of it mattered for your actual life.
That is a design problem rather than a you problem. Those rooms are built for competitors. There is no class here, no belt, and no lineup of people half your age.
I cannot afford to get injured.
That is the right thing to lead with, and it is answered by the structure rather than by reassurance. Capability is the fourth dimension, not the first, and that order is deliberate.
Reading environments, planning exits and understanding your own exposure carry no injury risk at all. Contact gets set at whatever keeps you working.
Two essays go further than this page does: one on what the system adds for someone already training, and one on why capability is built only on methods tested against real resistance.
From the work.
“Steve's Five Dimensions system is genuinely invaluable for my work. As a criminal defense investigator, situational awareness isn't theoretical: it has real consequences. Since training with Steve, I'm more confident in exactly the situations that matter. What makes it work is that the program is built around your actual life. Every other program required me to reshape my schedule around it. This one was shaped around mine.”
You have built the two that take longest.
The conversation is about the other three.
